Blowing bubbles in fused glass
Well… not really blowing bubbles, but I’ve enjoyed learning how to trap bubbles in glass. Here I’ve used glass stringers (or straws) to trap air between two sheets of glass.
I made the little grids first, by fusing the stringers together gently in the kiln. Then I put the fused grids on to a coloured piece of glass and sprinkled powder around the outside, before capping the designs with a clear piece of glass and firing them.
The powder allows air to travel out from between the sheets of glass, while it remains trapped between the squares of the grids. I think the trapped bubbles look lovely.
Finally, I slumped this piece into a square mould to form a shallow dish. It’s very bright and cheerful on a winter day.
